Front Porch Progress

Wow guess I haven't posted much of the progress i've made on the front porch so better get to it. Haven't had a whole lot of time in the past month or so to work on the house but have managed to put a good dent in the front porch, put up most of the siding and blocks for wall lights, installed trim and casing for door and got the door hung and sanded and watersealed the porch deck. Finished painting the window for the porch as well and put that back in its place. Also been working on the driveway side of the house framing a bump-out for the window in the dining room area so there will be a big window sill for plants, etc and will also build a planter box for the bump out, it will hopefully be a nice looking feature on that side of the house.

    1. Hi Briana, thanks very much, i'm impressed to look back at some of these pictures from time to time as well, can't believe some of the big projects i've gone through to get where I am now, its not as bad if you don't think too much about it, just chip away and do what you have to do and one day before you know it your looking back saying damn i did it!

    1. Thanks very much Brenda, ya the dream of having a house paid off with no rent or mortgage is pretty good fuel for the fire! Hope to get through most of this project without any loans, doing everything yourself is a huge money saver thats for sure!

  4. There are just no words. It takes a special person to see the hidden beauty in a disaster like that and want to tackle it. Way to go! Looking good! Are you off for the winter?

    1. Hey justin, thanks for the comment. Ya special, aka crazy! haha. I love having my own house to work on, I love home ownership, improving the house, the yard, I just enjoy it all. I get great satisfaction in doing my own work. I had an 1897 victorian farmhouse for about 10 years and lost it to a short sale by the bank a few years ago, got hit hard when the economy tanked. So I just needed something cheap to get my handyman fix while we rented a house! This was a bit more of a disaster than I had hoped to find but the location is awesome and the price was right! But it just killed me to think of renting a house and not having a house that I owned which I could fix up. Unfortunately its been a pretty cold winter and I just can't bring myself to work in temps under 30, also all the snow we've had keeps me from entering the road this house is on because its not town managed, i'll have to plow the driveway and road to get out of the house in the winter when i live there, but as of now i don't have a snow blower or a truck with a plow. So i've just been working on the original 12 over 12 windows of the house in the basement of my rental house, those darn things take so much time to restore, taking out any good old glass and removing all the old glazing, stripping them down to bare wood then priming and glazing in new glass then priming the glazing and finish painting and then cleaning up any paint on the glass, damn its alot of work, not to mention that i also salvage old glass from other windows i find so i have to take the old glass out of those window frames without breaking the glass, which is sometimes tough if that glazing is rock hard, then i clean the glass and go get it cut to the size i need. Like i said, alot of work! But man, I can just stare at those beauties when they are done and I love them, old 12/12 windows with old glass...i just don't think theres anything with more character. Thanks again & take care, jason
